Children’s Book North with Zoe Waring

Baby Books, Blog Posts, Blog Tour / Friday, November 27th, 2020

Welcome to Children’s Books North’s Autumn Highlights – celebrating new books from CBN members with a tour of Northern and Scottish book blogs. As a Northern lass myself, I’m a thrilled to be part of this fantastic blog tour for the Children’s Books North initiative.

Children’s Books North aims to connect children’s book professionals living in the North West, North East, Yorkshire and Scotland. The network seeks to promote our members’ work, new books and events. Additionally, CBN is keen to bring focus on the importance of regional diversity in children’s books and the industry.

I’m so happy to welcome Zoe Waring to the blog to talk about her fab new book and share some of her Northern loves with us. Peek-a-boo-baby: Boo! is a fantastic, spooky themed lift the flap book, containing a host of adorable and popular spooky themed characters. With high contrast colours, it’s bright, fun and engaging and just perfect for young babies and toddlers too. This enchanting book won’t fail to bring a smile to your child’s face, and this is what first reading is all about isn’t it?

And without further ado, to tell us more, welcome welcome Zoe to the blog! it’s lovely to have you.

Tell us about your new book

Hello, Alexis!

It’s called Peek-a-Boo Baby: BOO! It’s a fantastic, halloween-themed, interactive lift-the-flap book, where the reader can play peek-a-boo with a fun cast of characters.

This is the third book in the ‘Peek-a-Boo Baby’ series that I’ve illustrated for Pat-a-Cake Books.

ZOO and MOO came out earlier this year and BUZZROAR and I LOVE YOU publish in 2021. Peek-a-Boo Baby: ZOO was recently shortlisted for the Sainsbury’s Children’s Book Awards in the Baby and Toddler category, which was exciting!

Share your favourite spread/passage from the book

It’s hard to choose a favourite spread from BOO as they’re all so much fun… I think probably Vicky the Vampire. I love her bat wings!

What/who/where inspired this book?

The book is part of a series, where we’ve explored different themes.

We touched on farm animals and zoo animals in the first two titles and this one, being released around Halloween, is inspired by all things seasonally spooky!

Nominate one children’s book by a northern or Scottish creative to read this winter.

Ooh this is a tough one, there are so many! I have a couple on my list to buy my little one, Freja, this year.

I’m really looking forward to reading First Fairy Tales by Margaret Mayo, illustrated by the wonderful Helen Stephens. I’ve seen snippets of the beautiful artwork on Instagram – very exciting!

If you could be commissioned to illustrate anywhere up North where would you choose?

Gosh, this is an even tougher one! I could go for the stunning Northumberland coast or the beautiful Lake District (take me there now!), but I may actually choose somewhere closer to home, Ouseburn Farm.

As you may have noticed, I love drawing animals, and this fantastic little city farm is nestled in the heart of the Ouseburn, my favourite place in Newcastle upon Tyne. It’s surrounded by artist studios, little breweries, fantastic places to eat and listen to live music and has such a lovely hustley-bustley vibe in the summer. It’s one of the things that pulled me back up to the North, after living in London for 13 years.

The farm itself is a working farm with lots of animals. I can just picture them all getting up to mischief and exploring the area, once the gates are closed.

You’ve sparked my imagination with this question, thank you, Alexis… I’m off to draw!

Happy Drawing Zoe, and thank you so much for visiting the Book Monsters and I!
